UnboxCast - Victor Reader Stream 3rd Generation

Transcript
Hello, everyone. My name is Michael Noise and welcome to another Unbox cast. I'm here with Taylor Art and we're going to be unboxing the Victor Reader Stream third generation today. Is that right, Taylor?
Speaker B:Yeah, it is. I'm super excited. It finally arrived after some crazy shipping.
Speaker A:Shipping fun.
Speaker B:Yes, shipping fun. That's a new one.
Speaker A:Yes, with our Fetch residence system. So, Taylor, why don't you tell people real quick, what is the Victory Reader Stream?
Speaker B:Well, the Victory to Stream is like a talking book player for people who are blind. Now, this product is made by Humanware, which is a very popular manufacturer. And it's almost like a handheld device where you can play books and listen to podcasts and do all that kind of thing. If not the Bard player, that's a whole different thing. This is just a HumanWare victory. To Stream three.
Speaker A:But doesn't it play? Can't you use NLS Barred on the device?
Speaker B:You can, but you have to authorize Stream keys. I haven't done that process in such a long time, I don't even remember how to do it.
Speaker A:Okay, well, I guess do you want me to read what's on the box first?
Speaker B:Yeah, read what's on the box first.
Speaker A:Okay. So on one of the sides, it has Human Wear.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker A:On the front of the box, it has Human Wear, Victory to Stream. And it has a bunch of sound waves and different colors. And it has the device. Like I said, one side says human wear. One side has the Human Wear logo, the other side has Human Wear. And the other side has the information about the device barcodes and all that. The back of the device box has Human wear. It has all the labels and a bunch of text that's really small warnings and all those things. Otherwise, it's a pretty straightforward box.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker A:And here you go.
Speaker B:Let's go ahead and see if I can open this thing.
Speaker A:If you do need assistance, I can help you out.
Speaker B:And the cool thing is that, like I said, I bought this because I needed some help with some books and things for my classes because I'm going to be going to school. Right now, I'm in a tax class. I know people are going to be like, oh, my God, tax class? But I need a good way to review my material.
Speaker A:So, first off, Taylor pulled out the manual information.
Speaker B:Now I'm pulling out this thing that has a device on it. What do we call this thing? This white lid.
Speaker A:Michael yeah. Basically it's just a lid where the device sits. Kind of the iPhone comes boxed like that, too.
Speaker B:Okay, I'm going to set the device down. I just unboxed it. But I want to look at what's in the box first.
Speaker A:Just pull the device out and we'll go over the buttons and all those things before we turn it on in just a moment.
Speaker B:I kind of like it michael's doing audio description, and I pull out this thing. I think it's like an adapter for European.
Speaker A:I could tell you which one. So this is one of the non standard non US. Adapters.
Speaker B:Here's another non standard non US. Adapter.
Speaker A:Indeed, yes.
Speaker B:And where's the US. Adapter? This thing is a us. Adapter, I think maybe not.
Speaker A:So this is the US. Adapter.
Speaker B:Finally we have a wall plug, like a brick. And this is let me see what this is. This USB. What is this?
Speaker A:I'd imagine it's USBC, but let's see.
Speaker B:I'd imagine but you never know.
Speaker A:So this is a I'm going to take it out of the package. It is a USBA.
Speaker B:Wonderful.
Speaker A:So I'll go ahead and connect the adapter for the US. Plug to that.
Speaker B:Okay. And then we have some more adapters on here.
Speaker A:Okay. I'll get to those in just a second.
Speaker B:A lot of adapters and things here.
Speaker A:Yeah, I've noticed. And these just snap on. This is another plug.
Speaker B:I'm not sure what this is. This feels weird.
Speaker A:That is the charge cable, I believe, that goes with it.
Speaker B:Oh, is it?
Speaker A:So we're about to find out.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker A:It's some kind of a cable that they wrap really well.
Speaker B:I know, it's like too tight. And we're just left with the plain box.
Speaker A:So we just have a box left. So I'm pretty sure and the adapter is USBA to I can feel it. USBC. So it is a USBC device. The charge cable that comes with this is quite long, which is very good.
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker A:So very standard way to set this up. So you just have your standard power cord and those kind of things.
Speaker B:Now, I've not had a Victor stream in so long. Like, I got to remember how to use it because the last one I had is when I was in Michigan. So I had the second generation, or it might have been the first, I'm not sure.
Speaker A:But yeah, I'll put this over here.
Speaker B:Sorry, Michael.
Speaker A:Okay. And I just want to check something very quickly and then we'll get back to what we're doing.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker A:So that's pretty neat. So on the iPhone, when you're recording a recording, it actually puts it on the lock screen. And that's pretty neat.
Speaker B:That is really neat.
Speaker A:Yeah. This is the first time I've done this. All right. Do you want me to describe the device here?
Speaker B:Yeah, if you don't mind.
Speaker A:Okay. At the top of the device, it looks like let's see, almost like it opens. Like there's a rubberized area here that can open and we can plug. Oh, that's where the SD card goes.
Speaker B:Oh, great.
Speaker A:So that's where that goes. I do kind of wish they had a proper slot for that instead of just a silicone or rubber.
Speaker B:That'd be nice.
Speaker A:The left side of the device is the volume buttons.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker A:The right side, I'm guessing, is the power. And on the bottom we have a headphone jack, a USBC port, and the speaker. This kind of reminds me of a phone, kind of like a blanche similar. So, at the top of the device we have on the front, we have where it says Stream. On the far left, there's a document button. Middle button at the very top is WiFi. And the far right is a diamond shape button with a check mark in it. And then we have your typical keypad 123-45-6789 and asterisk, zero, and the number sign or pound. Now, I want to point out something. This is kind of cool. The two kind of has a little ridge at the top to show that that's an up arrow. The four has a ridge on the left to show that that's a left arrow. The five has two little dots on it to, I guess, mean like select. I'm not sure. The six has a ridge on the right side to show it's right arrow. And the eight has a ridge at the bottom to show it's a down arrow.
Speaker B:Okay, interesting.
Speaker A:Now, below the keypad, you have an arrow pointing left, which I'm guessing is a back button. Okay. And at the very bottom left, you have a rewind play pause and fast forward button. Very simple device, very simple layout. It makes sense to me. I'm looking on the back of the device. There are screw holes and things like that in a little silicone area around it. So if you put it down, it won't scratch. It's built pretty well. I will give them credit. I don't necessarily like the color scheme they used, but it looks like you're not meant to take the battery out.
Speaker B:That's how it usually is. You're not meant to take battery out. And that's where that's the only bad thing about these devices that you got to send them in to who knows where.
Speaker A:Okay, so I was mistaken. The power button is on the left with the volume buttons. It's right above the volume buttons. So I'm not actually sure what this button on the very far right does, because it is not marked up. So with that being, I wonder if it's like a record button. It actually is a yes. It's record. It's round and has a red circle on it.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker A:So that's record. So there's also a small port on the left side. I'm guessing that's like an ox or speaker in or microphone jack.
Speaker B:Yeah, and that's actually cool. So, when I was in Michigan, what I did is I actually got an external microphone to make the recording sound better, because if it's not an external microphone, the recording on the stream kind of sounds like garbage.
Speaker A:Yeah, but it's a very pocket sized device. Really good for notetaking. So, Taylor, would you like to do the honors of powering it on?
Speaker B:I will. Let me figure how to.
Speaker A:So, again, remember the left side above the volume buttons.
Speaker B:Okay. Let's see. So I think I figured small little button above the USBC sign?
Speaker A:No, above the volume buttons.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker A:The USBC goes on the bottom.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker A:And then the volume buttons will be on the left.
Speaker B:Okay. Here we go. Oh, is it dead?
Speaker A:Let's see.
Speaker B:I can't get it.
Speaker A:Let's try.
Speaker B:I wonder if it's dead. Probably.
Speaker A:Well, who knows how long this thing's been sitting on a shelf somewhere.
Speaker B:Yeah, we will have to charge it up and we will do that right now.
Speaker A:I was just looking to see if maybe it has a lock mode where you have to hold another button.
Speaker B:I don't think so.
Speaker A:Yeah, I don't think so either, but just figured I'd give it a shot.
Speaker B:It's probably dead.
Speaker A:Yeah, well, yeah, it's complete.
Speaker B:We'll turn it on but we'll charge it for a little bit and we'll be right back.
Speaker A:So do you want to try turning it on now?
Speaker B:Yeah, I can try to turn it on.
Speaker A:I heard a beep. Welcome to Victor Reader.
Speaker C:Zero books, no media whole key one, two, enter exit user guide.
Speaker B:Key describer on okay, so this is a key describer. So basically what the key describer is is it kind of tells you what each function of the keys do.
Speaker A:Okay, let's turn up your volume a little bit and see.
Speaker B:Yeah, we can do that.
Speaker C:Volume eleven, volume 16.
Speaker A:That's good.
Speaker C:Volume 20.
Speaker B:I was seeing a lot of and.
Speaker A:That'S a pretty good speaker.
Speaker B:Yeah, exactly. And that's why I was trying to test it. So I was trying to figure out how good this speaker is. So it's definitely better in this generation than previous, in my opinion, because I've had pretty much most of the versions of this device by now. So let's do this. Let's see, let me figure out. So we want to be able to.
Speaker C:Do key describers go to.
Speaker B:So this is the go to button. I'm at the top left because the USB stuff is on the bottom. So on the top left we have the go to button which is used to go to different things like go to a page in a book or different things like that.
Speaker C:Online bookshelf, podcast.
Speaker B:This is for online bookshelves.
Speaker C:Zero podcast feeds. Add podcast feed.
Speaker A:That's neat that you can add podcast feeds. And yes, you can play the IA cast on here, folks. So that is a thing.
Speaker B:Yes. So that's where you can play podcasts and do things like that. Okay.
Speaker A:Interesting sound.
Speaker B:Is that thing you're networking?
Speaker A:I don't know. You might need to press the back button down near the bottom.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker C:WiFi not connected.
Speaker B:I was trying to connect to the online bookshelves. We'll connect to WiFi later, folks. So see if I do try to get out of this.
Speaker A:Let me find the back button.
Speaker B:I can't find it. Nothing's working.
Speaker C:Sleep 15 minutes.
Speaker A:Oh, interesting.
Speaker C:So that's sleep 30 minutes, sleep 45, sleep 60, sleep off.
Speaker A:Okay, so I thought that may have been a back button. Let's do the left arrow.
Speaker C:Check for new episodes. Offline bookshelf, zero. Books, no media. Hold key. Want to enter or exit? User guide key. Describer on.
Speaker A:Okay, so we're back where we were.
Speaker B:Okay, bookmark.
Speaker C:That's like a bookmark to insert a bookmark.
Speaker B:Pretty helpful. So, like, if you're taking notes online, or not really online, but from book, you can insert BOOKMARKS. Now, I really wish that the BOOKMARKS would transfer devices, but unfortunately, I don't think that's the case. Although that's to be determined because I will probably test that later. Meaning that whenever you're on the computer, you can see the BOOKMARKS from the stream. That's really what I mean. So we'll see that later. Okay, next row we have bookshelf one. All the different bookshelves.
Speaker C:Scroll up. Two.
Speaker B:This is a scroll up, and it says two because this is part of the keypad.
Speaker C:Manage books three.
Speaker B:Manage books. Okay.
Speaker C:Move back four.
Speaker B:Four is move back. Okay, good to know.
Speaker C:Where am I? Five.
Speaker B:Where am I? Is five. So that's different than go to because where am I? Will basically tell you where you are in the book and Go to will basically allow you to go to a different section.
Speaker C:Move forward six.
Speaker B:Forward is six. Now we go to the next row.
Speaker C:Menu, no local settings. General settings.
Speaker B:Okay, so it's a menu, and I got to press back, which is four.
Speaker C:Online settings, or maybe not.
Speaker B:Okay, let me see if I can do this.
Speaker A:Press four again.
Speaker B:Okay.
Speaker C:Recording four again. Wireless.
Speaker A:So it sounds like you're in the menu. Four and six is going to go back between the different items, I think.
Speaker B:Yeah. So let me see if I can go.
Speaker C:Navigation and playback. General settings.
Speaker B:Just trying to get out of this menu.
Speaker C:Online settings.
Speaker A:Now press one.
Speaker C:One leaving menu. Describer on.
Speaker B:So one leaves this menu. Okay.
Speaker A:One's. Cutting your back button, I think.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:Menu, no local settings.
Speaker B:General setting. Okay, let me go back again.
Speaker C:Leaving menu. Scroll down eight.
Speaker B:So it's like a down arrow.
Speaker C:Playback mode nine.
Speaker B:Playback mode. Not exactly sure what that is. Do you know?
Speaker A:No. I am brand new to this device, so I have no clue.
Speaker B:I think we all are.
Speaker C:I mean cancel Star.
Speaker B:Cancel the star. Okay.
Speaker C:Info zero. No external media. Internal space available. Twelve point 39gb. I don't like how much internal space charging 3% WiFi. No. Network saved. Mac address f, zero. Info zero.
Speaker A:No, we'll leave it in the Mac address. It doesn't really matter. Just press one to go out.
Speaker B:All right.
Speaker C:Bookshelves one.
Speaker B:I don't need all the information. It was going to read the serial number next. That's why I said, get rid of this. So, yeah, that's all the info.
Speaker C:Info zero.
Speaker B:Of course. I do that again.
Speaker C:Confirm pound.
Speaker B:That's a confirm key.
Speaker A:So stars cancel. Confirm is pound.
Speaker B:Then we have this long button in the next row by itself.
Speaker C:Sleep 15 minutes and that sleeps.
Speaker B:So if you want to set a sleep timer so you're going to have.
Speaker A:To press that a bunch of times to get to sleep off.
Speaker B:Yes.
Speaker C:Sleep 30, sleep 45, sleep 60 minutes, sleep off.
Speaker A:There you go.
Speaker B:It doesn't really matter right, though, because it's in key describer, so it won't actually take action.
Speaker A:It sounds like it is. Is what taking action.
Speaker B:I don't know about yeah, but I think it's trying to show you what you need to do. It's like a tutorial.
Speaker A:Yeah, but the menus and the info are still working.
Speaker B:Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker C:Jump backward, hold the rewind.
Speaker B:So now I'm kind of at the very bottom row. So the first one on the left is jump backward like we rewind play, stop, play, stop in the middle.
Speaker C:Jump forward.
Speaker B:Jump forward to fast forward in the bottom. Right.
Speaker A:So how do we get out of the key describer?
Speaker B:That's a good question. I think let's see.
Speaker A:Maybe hold down one.
Speaker B:One.
Speaker C:Entering user guide.
Speaker B:Oh, no.
Speaker C:Entering. Use a guide. Victor reader screen user guide okay. Menu, local settings.
Speaker B:So I think we're out of key describer.
Speaker A:Sounds like it.
Speaker B:So then we can connect to a WiFi network. The only thing I don't like about this is, like I said, it is a T nine. But I think you could probably connect a bluetooth key. T nine basically is like we have to do one, a one, two, three song.
Speaker A:Would you like me to go through the settings real quick so people can hear what's there? Yeah, yeah, let's see.
Speaker B:You want it?
Speaker A:Yeah, I'll take it real quick.
Speaker C:Navigation and playback, wireless recording, online settings, general settings.
Speaker A:Let's go to general settings now.
Speaker C:Language System language System keyboard date and time sleep keyboard date and time system, general settings, navigation and playback. Leaving menu. Victor Reader stream user Guides now I.
Speaker A:Think you could go through stuff. Let's just do a demo of playing. So I'm going to play victor Reader.
Speaker C:Stream user Guide humanware Victor Reader stream user Guide by Humanware v one 1 March 20, 2023 user Guide pause it.
Speaker A:Victor Readers so this is a really new device. If they made that document in March.
Speaker B:Yes, this is a very new device. But I could just picture this voice. These are headings, by the way.
Speaker A:Okay, so that's good. So I'm trying to think how we let's see.
Speaker C:Keyboard locked. Welcome to Victor Reader zero books, no media. Hold key. Want to enter or exit user guide? Key describer on scroll down.
Speaker A:Okay, so our key lock is back off. And what did it say to exit key describer?
Speaker B:You know what? Remember, I don't think it's in key describer.
Speaker A:It says key describer on that's because.
Speaker B:There'S no media, I don't think.
Speaker A:Maybe.
Speaker C:So scroll up two.
Speaker B:We can still access the menus which we want to connect to WiFi.
Speaker C:Move back four menu. No local settings, general settings, navigation and playback. Wireless.
Speaker B:Yep. Select five.
Speaker A:No, that's that's.
Speaker C:Pound airplane mode off. WiFi. Bluetooth airplane. WiFi. WiFi on status. New connection. Launch connection.
Speaker A:So I think this is a good way where people could see what the initial experience is. We'll do the WiFi and all that offline. But what are your thoughts so far?
Speaker B:It's a pretty nice device and I think we'll probably do more tutorials about this. I mean, man, I can try to picture that voice trying to read IRS publication.
Speaker A:I wonder where you change the voice.
Speaker B:I don't know if you can. This voice is fine. It's fine, but I'm just saying.
Speaker A:Yeah. Okay. Well, do you have any final thoughts before we wrap this thing up?
Speaker B:You know, I'm going to keep playing with it, but really, like I said, I would readily recommend that getting an external microphone for this thing is probably going to be the best if you want to record with it, just because it will be a lot better quality than the streamed microphone. Now, would I ever record a podcast on a stream? Probably not. Unless, like, for example, I don't know, let's say the power was out and everything else was dead, or for some reason my phone wasn't working, then I maybe would do that, of course, with an external mic.
Speaker A:Right. All right, well, I think this has been a great unbox cast and this has been very interesting. I haven't seen one of these before and it's very simple, very high contrast buttons so you can see them and all that good stuff. So I'll hand this back to you and Taylor has a new shiny device to play with and we will do more unbox cast. So this has been Michael and Taylor and we will sign off for now, but thanks everyone and hope you have a great day.
